Jeff Chandler, whose real name is Ira Grossel, was born on December 15, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York. He is the son of Phillip Grossel, a grocer, and Anna Herman, a stay-at-home mother. Jeff grew up in a Jewish family of Russian and Lithuanian descent. He had two older brothers, Robert and Edward. Jeff Chandler studied at Erasmus Hall High School and then continued his studies at Brooklyn College. He was a brilliant student and already had an interest in theater and music. After graduation, he decided to pursue a career in acting. In the early 1940s, Jeff Chandler was noticed by an agent who offered him a contract with 20th Century Fox.
He changed his birth name to Jeff Chandler and began getting roles in B-movies. However, it was in 1950 that he gained his first major recognition with the role of Cochise, an Apache chief, in the film “The Captive with the Light Eyes”. Jeff Chandler continued his successful acting career in the 1950s and 1960s. He starred in films such as “The Hunted Horseman”, “The Tiger in the Sky” and “Tuesday Will Bleed”. He was renowned for his charisma and talent for interpretation. Unfortunately, in 1961, Jeff Chandler suffered a serious back injury during filming which left him immobile for several months. He underwent several surgeries but suffered post-operative complications which eventually took their toll. He died on June 17, 1961 at the age of 42.
